  Moon Logic
Posted by: Ed Hurst - 06-02-2019, 09:36 AM - Forum: Miscellaneous - Replies (2)

Just a little primer for those who don't already know: If you are going to observe the moon phases, you need to know the logic of how it moves. Think about it. The moon faces earth with the same face always. If we see a bright face (full moon), it's facing the sun. That means it's almost behind earth, opposite the sun from our position. If we see a dark face (new moon), then it's between us and the sun.

When it's between us and the sun, it's closer to the daylight. As the moon phase shifts toward the new moon, it rises later and later in the morning, until the actual new moon phase change when it's almost invisible against the light of the sun. Part of knowing it's almost a new moon is that you go out before dawn and the moon is just coming up ahead of the sun, and its face is dark to us, except for a thin sliver of silver.

As we head toward the full moon, it rises later and later in the day, until at the full moon itself, when it doesn't appear with the sun at all, but only at night.

  Two wheels again YAY!

One marathon session Saturday got her did. I went for a short test run and made some adjustments then, a little longer one and came back to check for oil leaks, none. Go further Sunday. It feels good not having to listen to Motorcycles growlin' up the mountain knowing I can scoot if I want to. It was hard not being able to and having to hear that. "Dadgummit, it orter be me!"

  Sheldrake video

YouTube "Rupert Sheldrake - What does Jesus Christ symbolize? (Video lecture)
Illustrious Elders, I watched this and at various points "knew" what was incorrect about it. I got a problem, I ain't no writer so, on one hand I can say "man, he's missing something that I know in my heart to be true" but, I can't explain it. Why don't one of y'all do that for me. He makes some accurate observations but, misses what I see as the essence of truth. Take your time, my Faith ain't never been shook by intellectual dismissal so, it's not like I'm all aflutter. You guys can put into words what I cannot. Thanks
It may be the continuing insistence that nothing is higher than the intellect and that everything can deconstructed.

Weekly Wednesday Prayer + Fasting, 5/29/2019
Posted by: jaybreak - 05-29-2019, 07:41 AM - Forum: Announcements - No Replies

We are participating in our weekly corporate prayer time at 5pm EST. Check out the prayer request forum for some prayer topics, but feel free to lift up your own.

You may also fast *. There's no obligation or guidelines to how you should do it, or if you should do it at all. Just fast as the Lord leads and speaks to your convictions.

* Typed this as I finished up my morning bacon and eggs.

  The Millerite Impulse
Posted by: Ed Hurst - 05-29-2019, 07:10 AM - Forum: Miscellaneous - Replies (2)

First, I must confess I was briefly duped myself. While maintaining a certain amount of doubt, I was hoping. Eventually I saw enough to turn away.

Consider this link to a safe archive viewing of a particular webpage. There you can read how the Q stuff turns out to be another example of false End Times zeal. The author compares it with the Millerite deception, and does a good job of showing the similarities. A similar copy of the original "Q" homepage is here. You can find more information at ZeroHedge. I don't agree with all the details there, but it's not too bad for a review.

It was over a period of some years that I shed the false enthusiasm of the Millerite delusions. I think I know when it began -- I spotted a book in a dump bin at a Christian bookstore that went out of business a short time later. I didn't have the money on hand or I would have bought it that day, and when I got the money, I went back and the store was going out of business. The book was gone. It was one of several books you could find today that debunks Dispensationalism. That was during the mid-1980s. The peak of my research into the topic was twenty years later.

There were plenty of other people running along that dead-end Dispensationalist path, but I would agree with the author of that first page that the Millerites were easily one of the strongest influences on the whole thing.

  Lightning Photos

Not photos, but still images taken from video. There was a brief, but intense, storm passing through the area yesterday evening. The bulk of it slid northeast of us, and the video I took was down our street, facing the sky in that direction. It dumped a lot of water on us maybe 30 minutes after this.

This first photo was one brief event, the remaining are all of another very active event. Saved the best still for last. Crazy stuff.

American Church offices & the Bible
Posted by: IainH - 05-17-2019, 11:09 AM - Forum: Miscellaneous - Replies (3)

I served two consecutive terms as a deacon in our church. We did do some of the Biblical duties such as taking time to serve the elderly, assist with communion and organize church activities. I had no problem doing these things. One enterprising deacon before my time had stumbled across the notion of a deacon shepherd. What this amounted to was to be given a list of names of church members that we were supposed to "shep". I searched for this definition in the Bible and could not find it. So, instead of creating a stink and causing disunity, I took my list and underlined the old people and did what I could for them. Conversating and praying. The rest didn't fall under the purview of a deacon so, I didn't try to shep them. Most of the time the "crumblies" enjoyed the attention and appreciated the prayers but, when it came to spiritual things, it was the preacher and no one else. From what I gather our church was one of the more biblically sound when it came to deaconry, in spite of the shepherding nonsense. I call it nonsense because shepherding is a calling and not a job to be assigned.
  Tangent Alert!!
As far as I know the only denomination that ranks elders above preachers are the Presbyterians.  In the Church of Scotland, the General Assembly of Prebysters "elders" is the ruling body and active ministers cannot take part. In the 1970's their annual grand "hoohah" was televised so little old ladies like my Grandmother could watch and take notes so they could complain.
Personally, I believe the decline of morality in the UK and Protestant Europe is due to the extinction of a generation of little old ladies, whose wool clad, cane carrying presence scurrying around admonishing people of the consequences of their ungodly ways, maintained the moral order. Their authority when wielded could stop a hardcore criminal dead in their tracks. Their presence kept  Western Civilization in the post war era afloat. They have since died out and Europe teeters on the brink of oblivion.
Meanwhile, here at home, Boomers are the new grandparents and they're "hip". America is doomed.

  Fasting for Wednesdays
Posted by: jaybreak - 05-17-2019, 09:42 AM - Forum: Miscellaneous - Replies (9)

Going to start officially mentioning fasting for Wednesdays, to accommodate our corporate prayer.

Obviously, tere's no obligation to take part; we should all listen to God's placement of personal conviction on if/how we should participate.

I recommend not mentioning if we actually do take part, since I see the act as response between yourself and God, but I obviously can't (nor want) to police anyone on the matter.
