It may just be one of my groggy 3:00am thunks but, given the state of America, it seems to me that exorcist should be a growth industry.

The problem with exorcism, as we all know, is the serious misunderstanding our society has with it. The American mythology about the Devil and how he works is the single biggest hindrance to effective exorcism. But I do have a vision that we can begin to push back the darkness on this.

Western exorcism is not what I had in mind, that's theater. My approach is from a different place entirely and would vary based on the situation at hand. I have a few general rules or steps. 1. Determine that the person is genuinely afflicted by a demon and not suffering from a psychological disorder. 2. Determine whether or not God wants to use you to bring Him Glory by evicting an unwanted tenant. 3. It is probably a good idea to get prayed up and in the zone before acting. 4. If God wants the vermin gone, a simple command should suffice. Anything else is a show for the afflicted's family. 5. Addition to #3. A strong covering of prayer over the oppressed person. 6. Unless exorcist is your divine calling, it's probably not a good idea to take these actions on people outside of your covenant tribe. In conclusion, my post was a joke that Ed couldn't help but, take seriously thereby, prompting me to actually ponder the question of demonic possession and how my faith would require me to act. Please, anything that you can add or modify would be most appreciated. I haven't addressed what to do post possession, I was assuming that the survivor is marked as one of the LORD's own and can be led to the path of righteousness. I get the feeling that sooner or later, I will be faced with this scenario. And, now for something completely different. Mmm...I think I'll put "completely different" in it's own post.

A basic underlying principle: The whole thing works better when the victim drives out their own demons. Often the work of an exorcist is helping someone demonized to realize they don't have to tolerate it. But then again, sometimes it does require an exercise of spiritual dominion and leadership.
And by no means would I deny the humor in what you originally wrote. It's just that you were right for reasons you might not have consciously considered. Jokes are funnier when they have a basis in truth. |
