I recall French signs on the sides of a thousand-year-old cathedral warning people not to urinate on the foundation stonework. You could see from a distance the damaged done to the surface. That was a Francophone town in Belgium, either Spa or close to it.

Was the foundation stained or worn down? The thought of all the urine needed to actually do some visible damage is...mind-boggling.

There were places where the stone had been literally dissolved away. Maybe not enough to threaten the building, but it enough to be visible. And then, too, the stains and the smell...
