    There were a few vehicles I couldn't get in the picture. The apartment building next door caught fire. We don't have the whole story just yet, but I believe all 8 units will be closed down for now. As I took these shots, the back side was still smoldering and the fire crews were tearing off part of the roof because the fire was in the attic.

The fire started in the upper floor apartment on the back corner, farthest from both shots. The family of 3 was in their bedrooms and couldn't get out the front door, so they had to jump from the windows. The guy who helped them land safely was injured by trying to catch them. The breezeway was where the fire lasted longest once the firemen arrived. The whole top floor was damaged. My initial assessment is that the building will be demolished as soon as the fire investigators and insurance folks are finished. None of these units are in the best shape, built in 1975 roughly.

Oh wow!  So very sad for the folks who will now be displaced.  Our fire in 2017 was very frightening; we were blessed in that no one was badly hurt and the damage was limited.

Dodged another one It's a testament for our family, for sure.

Coincidentally, a town over from me, there was an apartment fire that took the entire building down, though it wasn't very large. No one was injured. This happened early Friday morning.

Something to note: the fire affected Internet connectivity for a few towns, including ours. My wife woke me up Friday morning that our Internet was down, which means I had to actually go into office. It wasn't a big deal for me, other than the short notice, since I had been going in once a week for the last month anyways. I found it odd that fire in a small building could affect connectivity like that. It was fixed rather quickly, though: only a few hours it was out.

There are rumors that ours was arson. The silly part about this is that it is highly unlikely an official report will be publicized. It may become a public record somewhere, but it's the kind of thing where you have to jump through numerous hoops to see it. Meanwhile, it will sit there boarded up and stinking of melted plastic for a very long time. From what I can see, the entirety of the rafters were burned badly enough to be unusable, as were all the wall sections facing into the breezeway. I don't see how they could even dream of rebuilding with any of the current framing. I'm expecting to see it broke into any day now.

A week later it still is a major component of the stink coming out of that building.
