Trying to Read My Own Heart
#2
I've read and heard at sundry times and in diverse manners* the decline and fall of the American Empire compared to ancient Rome. Personally, having studied history for as long as I can remember, I don't see it relating much to any ancient civilization except for aspects peculiar to empires in general. If we wish to seek commonalities, we need only look back in recent history to the country whose empire we inherited, Great Britain. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the sun never set on the British Empire and their navy was the master of the seven seas. Two world wars and theĀ great depression wiped their empire out and we took over. How many Brits saw that coming in 1900? A handful, perhaps? I'm not saying this is how it'll go down, I'm offering it up as a recent example of the collapse of a western empire.

* Yeah I ripped off Hebrews 1:1.
