The windy season strikes again! I don't mind the cold, ice and snow, freezing rain or plain old cold rain but the wind in this holler is enough to drive you nuts and knock you on your A double S if you ain't careful. I got a weather station which I'm gonna attempt to mount to the deck but, I'm confident that the wind will tear it to shreds. I want to know if my estimate of wind gusts is accurate. My guess is over 60 mph based on how it feels riding my bike. Accuweather says 45 mph gusts in Blowing Rock which is always lower than in the venturi section of the holler where our home is located. It messes with my internet which takes me to the point of exasperation. Plus, Georgia Southern are beating App St at home in OUR crappy weather, it's a disgrace aaarghh!

One of our most famous local weathermen made a great ad for his station. He stood out on an open prairie where the wind was blowing. "Some of you folks don't realize that there is something out here between us and those fierce polar fronts blowing through our state." He held up a strand of rusting barbed wire. "But it ain't much."

I was unceremoniously awakened this morning with
"where's the machete?"
"Uh...next to the shotgun"....
"which shotgun?"
"The tactical"
"I don't see it"
"Argh...red handle"
At this point, I just reached over and grabbed it
" there's a burble gluggle...." I didn't quite hear that so, I did what I should never do jumped out of bed into immediate
action, not good on the wore out parts. I looked out the window and saw the Bradford Pear had split in two with half laying across the driveway. My clueless crew needed supervision so, got out on the deck and hollered instructions.
Just an example of how hard wind gusts get, later today I'll have to climb up on the roof and see how many shingles got torn loose and fix that. It is a regular thing between now and May. A tin roof is a priority savings objective. We could get a loan but, I'm not going to take on the risk of debt with a home that is paid for as collateral. So for the next few years I'll be patching the roof, after that a well, the water from the spring has a tiny amount of fine silt in it and because we are the first house in line, it all builds up in our plumbing and is a p.i.t.a. to deal with and I hate plumbing work.

We got a lot of wind the last few days here, but we have the hills to block and redirect them. Temperature went down to the 30s, too. It's actually a lot nicer cycling in that temperature than something warmer. Our shingles are fine.

Yep, Bradford pears have seriously weak crotches and why oh why did all the builders plant a gazillion of them in NC? They are pretty in the fall but not so much when they fall. I bet B cut down/pruned more of them than any other tree species. They just are not "built" for any kind of high wind.

I noticed a split in it back in the spring one day as I was checking mailbox and told myself
"Mr Iain, you need to cut this limb off before winter"
Other stuff would need doing so, it was forgotten, remembered, put on the back burner, forgotten and remembered and forgotten again until it busted. It's all cleared away now.
