Racing Strips
#1
I was exposed to strong sunlight on my ride back Tuesday. While I did use zinc oxide paste on most exposed flesh, I missed a couple of places. Turns out the vents in my bike helmet left me with stripes on my scalp. I need a good sun hat for future rides, something that will shade me down to the shoulders with a brim that won't fold up in the wind.

This happened to me before, way back when I did a ride to downtown Pittsburgh. I've worn a hat underneath my helmet ever since.

Something like this looks decent:

That does look nice, but I'm actually getting away from the helmet itself. I've considered all the angles and satisfied that, here in Oklahoma during the summer, the danger of sun exposure is greater than the risk of bumping my head.

Walmart has a SUN CUBE Sun Hat for Men at a very reasonable price.  Is that what you are talking about?

After spending part of my day looking at dozens of styles, I've decided I want something called a breezer. It has a rather wide brim that is stiff, and the crown is highly ventilated. Most of them actually have a sun protection rating.

I've had this skullcap for a couple of years. After having to shave my head again, I have no problem wearing it under the helmet for riding around the city. However, for hours in the sun riding across country, I needed better protection.

I found this at the Academy store today and it was cheaper at $30 than most of what I saw on Amazon and others. No one makes the hi-viz color scheme I would prefer, so this will have to do. As soon as the weather here calms down for a bit, my next trip is likely out west somewhere.

That new hat looks good and practical. Glad you found one so quickly.

Linda - that hat you posted looks nearly identical to one I bought earlier this week, for Honduras. My skin is very northern Euro and my head and neck will cook like a rotisserie chicken down there if I don't have protection.

On our bike ride this weekend I might try wearing it under my helmet (without the face/backflap part...I don't need those quite yet).
