The Hebrew culture was loaded with its own brand of dry humor. I'm quite convinced it shows up throughout the Bible, and we don't see without some help. By the same token, we would struggle to comprehend the kind of respect these people had for the power of superhuman beings. Most westerners would simply not believe what they saw, and mutter about "superstition". But make no mistake: A critical element in what the angels would do in such a scene would include intimidating the soldiers, even staring them down, if need be.
