NT Doctrine -- 2 Peter 3
#3
As far as anyone can tell, Gnosticism was born from the Jewish rejection of the Messiah. The availability of Hellenistic rationalism was a convenient way to reject Christ's divinity. The foundation of Gnosticism was a branching out from Platonism, that Christ was either man or God, but simply could not be both. While Judaism has disowned Gnosticism, it was rooted in Judaism. You can find common threads between Gnosticism and the Kabbalah.
