I may have mentioned this elsewhere, but Hellenism was big in promoting the idea of attaining eternal life through remembrance via the state. That was as close to a type of salvation that they could come up with. I suppose it makes some sense if you consider that governments were the biggest, most powerful thing in existence at the time. I don't know; I guess it feels to me like they could've used their imagination a little more?
