Quite right, Jay. European deities are ill-defined and spooky; it was a reaction to nameless dark fears. They were assumed to be nothing more than extra-powerful people, a human-centered model. The eastern religions took a totally different approach. Gods were persons in their own right, and you could get to know them, though they were something entirely different from humans.
