Wondering if a lot of the Sanhedrin already secretly knew Jesus was the real deal and needed to know they had public support (in Gamaliel) to show leniency. Whether or not they secretly had actual faith in Him is irrelevant--to the narrative, I mean. It's was relevant to them, personally, for obvious reasons
