Follow-up: Excellent article, including a report translated from French that offers a less jaundiced view of things: Is It Possible to Actually Know What Has Been and Is Going On in Ukraine? It's long and includes a lot of detail, but my impression is that it paints a far more honest picture of what this military action is all about.
To summarize, virtually all claims by western MSM are sheer nonsense. Most of what is happening is falsely reported, either in substance or in terms of causes. Russia never intended to occupy Ukraine as a whole, only to create a safe zone for those in Ukraine who maintain a Russian identity. It appears they are seeking to secure an area bounded by language. Russian and Ukrainian are similar, but different enough to sound different, even to our ears, and it became a major point of contention when the 2014 coup produced a government that outlawed use of Russian in the Ukraine. It's the kind of petty nonsense you would expect from western provocations.
You will discover that the neo-nazi Azov Brigades are simply militarized criminal thugs, loyal to no one in particular but themselves. Their spite for Ukrainian civilians is only slightly less than their hatred for the Russian society in Ukraine that had put them in jail at various times for criminal acts. Their primary identity is Russian-speaking criminals seeking revenge against the mainstream Russian-speaking society in Donbass. It's part of their rejection of the mainstream that they embraced the Nazi identity, so that identity was not the objective, but a side-effect. They existed for the past eight years as mercenaries funded by the West. The current action in Ukraine is aimed in part at isolating them and then destroying their formations.
Thus, the claim that Russia intended only to disarm and de-nazify Ukraine is backed up by their actions so far. That they are also seeking to protect the Russian-speaking minority is just something we should take for granted.
