NT Doctrine -- Luke 7:36-50
#3
The information is sketchy. However, we know that the Pharisees only pretended to be culturally conservative. They had picked up on some Persian, Greek and Roman habits. Thus, when they had a formal dinner, they wanted the public to gawk at all the important people. So as long as you were quiet and stayed in the shadows, just about anyone could wander in and watch these oh-so important people eat and have their oh-so important conversations. The participants put on a show, while the audience respectfully avoided calling attention to themselves.
