There's lots of things to say about this, Iain, but I think the main point is that when the state (government) function is largely separated from the nation (people/culture) function, it can only end badly. You have a small-sized apparatus, the state, who essentially are allowed to use force, vs. a large-number group who, by their position to the state, must comply...and when there's a large need to comply because the state apparatus is no longer an extension of the nation group, there's bound to be bloodshed.
But like Ed said, we don't need to be worried, and we shouldn't even be surprised. That's the way of the world, and we should be ready for whatever tasks God puts in our hands.
