North Carolina allows for handguns as long as you have acquired a permit first from the local sheriff's office. In our county, you are allowed up to five permits per year for $5 each. However, the handgun must be visible at all times unless you have a conceal carry permit. Rifles and shotguns require no permit or anything. I don't know anyone who does not have a firearm of one sort or another in our neighborhood. We don't carry them around with us; mostly have them for home security or hunting. In our case, there are foxes and coyotes and any number of wild animals that may be rabid or too interested in our chickens.
On those occasions when destinations may be questionable as far as safety is concerned, having a weapon is not a bad idea. Unless you never shot one before! Anyone with any sense has learned gun safety and shot enough times to be accurate.
