The shops here in this area are overwhelmed. I cannot get help from them for weeks to come.

I looked at the belts and detected a slippery, almost oily film on one of the pulleys. So I decided to try belt-dressing. It made a huge difference in how the engine sounded. As I drive around here today, I'll keep a watch on it. When something like an alternator fails, it's almost always all or nothing. It's quite rare for them to give trouble until they simply quit working.

Can one be ordered on-line expeditiously?  Assuming you have the tools?

RE: Stepfather - Ed Hurst - 08-23-2022

I don't have the tools here. Mom has a few tools, but nothing like the specialty stuff I have. On the other hand, I don't have the expertise to use a multimeter to check on the condition of the alternator in the first place, so getting a new one doesn't make sense until I know it's needed. My son can check it with ease, but he's about 700 miles away. My Mom hasn't had older vehicles, so she has no friends who do that kind of work.

So you're basically stuck until you can get it fixed?

RE: Stepfather - Ed Hurst - 08-24-2022

No, the belt dressing I sprayed on seems to have solved the immediate problem. The car runs and there is no sign of trouble from the alternator light. I'm going to stay one more day and then leave tomorrow early.

Okay then.  Do let me/us know when you head on up the road to home.  You know how I love to pray for my traveling family!

RE: Stepfather - Ed Hurst - 08-24-2022

Amen, Sister. I'll start another thread for that. It will include my Mom's other prayer requests. As you might expect, a survivor has a load of care after someone close dies.

For sure, I can understand the burdens after a loved one passes away!  If there is anything I can do for her in that respect, do let me know.  I do have a "template" of sorts for "what to do when you have no idea what all needs to be done" when someone passes - legal, courthouse, finances, etc..  Although based on NC procedures, it may still be useful in TX.

Love you and do let your Mom know we love her also and are praying for her!

For anyone that missed it, I posted this document here.
