Rejoice with me.

It's been roughly a year since I bought that used car so cheaply, knowing I'd have to fix a lot of things. During that whole time, I never could figure out where it was leaking. I was pretty sure it was the manual transmission, because it was too thick to be motor oil and it smelled like gear lube to me. Still, it bothered me. It wasn't just the mess of the leak, but it made me uncomfortable worrying that it would get too low and ruin the transmission.

I've been praying about this ever since I noticed the leak. So when our tax refund turned out to be pretty good, I finally took it to a shop. It took a big bite out of that tax refund. Turns out it wasn't the transmission leaking, but a compressor. I guess I took it to the right place, because they also cleaned off the previous leak splash so I could keep an eye on things and see that it wasn't leaking any more. Nice touch. I also got a nice clue about other problems I couldn't afford to have them fix.

The thing that is such a blessing is that I no longer have cause to worry about the transmission fluid level. I'm not nervous about taking off on longer drives now. Glory to the Lord!
Now you can breathe again and relax.  Praise the Lord!

Not that you were holding your breath!  Ha ha  It is wonderful when we can have those little "big" things taken care of and not have to even think about them anymore.

Happy for you.
Hallelujah!
A nice little praise report Smile
Update: I finally managed to gather up the stuff to change the transmission oil, and had good weather to do it. You see, when I got it, I know that someone had done some work on the transmission, and I thought the leak was related to that. So, as long as I thought it was leaking, I kept adding gear lube to it. When I realized that wasn't the case, it meant there was a good chance I had added too much. Now, if that were the case, it would be a mild threat to the seals and would be a drag on the engine.

So today I drained it and refilled it. With these smaller VWs, that's the only way you can be sure you have the right amount (2 quarts). Well, it turns out that what I drained out was less than 2 qts. So now it seems likely the silly thing was nearly empty when I brought it home. There is a certain amount you cannot drain out in the first place; the 2 qts. thing takes that into account. Also, I had added some rather early in the game, so there was no real danger of having ruined it.

Anyway, it's all better now.
Glad you had good weather and success. I always liked helping my oldest fix problems with her car on a pretty day. It amazed us what we could figure out together.. Good times
Good job, Ed.

I remember when an old car of mine was leaking something. It was water from the AC, but a lot of it was in a place on the ground where it normally wouldn't be for cars. It turns out because of the way the car was, some of the condensation would travel back and drop onto the ground near the middle of the car. Kinda weird, but when I did all those sniff tests I could swear it had a slight odor to it. The human mind can really mess with you.
